Objectives

These objectives were conceived at the end of 2023 and published on this website in May 2024. Unfortunately, they still need to remain in place.

Despite new elections, a new cabinet, a new Prime Minister, many new members of the House of Representatives, and above all, a growing number of people taking to the streets – to demonstrate for peace, against all forms of violence (which we also include all forms of discrimination), for solidarity, and for the strengthening of democratic values – nothing has changed in the attitude of the Dutch government towards human rights, war, and genocide.

Groningers for Peace will therefore continue to organize activities aimed at a more peaceful society. We hope to inspire Groningers and Groningen organizations to work towards this. To this end, we also want to inform about the possibilities and, where possible, support and/or co-organize activities.

We ask the Dutch government:

that the Dutch government adheres to all treaties signed by the Netherlands concerning human rights, war, and genocide. Regardless of whether they are friendly or not with regimes;

that the Dutch government does its utmost to ensure that other governments also sign and respect the treaties concerning human rights, war, and genocide;

that the Dutch government ensures that supranational institutions such as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court gain (more) authority;

that the Dutch government ensures that Dutch citizens are taught to resolve conflicts and differences of opinion peacefully: through lessons in primary schools, by funding research such as Conflict Studies, (neighbourhood) mediation, inclusive decision-making, etc., etc.

that the Dutch government invests at least as much money in peace as in the military*

*Currently, the government is strongly increasing the budget for military expenditures while cutting diplomacy. See here here
